Amway has a rich history, dating back to the company’s founding in 1959, in Ada, Michigan, by school friends Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos. The company has expanded through the years to a multi-billion-dollar health and wellbeing enterprise that has provided an onramp to entrepreneurship for millions of people in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide. Here are some highlights:

  • 1959: Rich and Jay started Amway out of the basements of their homes with their first product, Frisk Liquid Organic Cleaner Concentrate – one of the world’s first biodegradable, concentrated multi-purpose cleaners.
  • 1960s: Amway sales reached $50 million with international expansion and the addition of new products, including the Artistry™ brand, which debuted with 11 skin care and cosmetic products in 37 different shades.
  • 1970s: Amway acquired the Nutrilite™ brand, adding vitamins and supplements to its product offerings. The company also moved into eight more international markets and expanded the world headquarters in Ada to almost one million square feet.
  • 1980s: Thanks to the power of more than 1 million Independent Business Owners, Amway expanded into an additional 20 countries and topped $1 billion in sales for the first time.
  • 1990s: Amway more than doubled in size during this decade, expanding into 33 additional markets. The company also purchased and began operating certified organic farms to grow botanicals for Nutrilite ingredients.
  • 2000s: Amway’s global home tech division featuring iCook™ cookware, eSpring™ water purifiers and Atmosphere™ air purifiers reached $1 billion in sales, a company milestone.
  • 2010s: After serving as the exclusive distributor of XS™ energy drinks since 2003, Amway acquired the brand outright in 2015. XS now offers a full array of sports nutrition products and energy drinks.
  • 2020s: Amway celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2024, marking 65 years of empowering the success of Independent Business Owners and helping people around the world live better, healthier lives.
