Importance of hydration

Did you know that more than half of your body consists of water? About 60%, actually. With that fact in mind, it’s not surprising that staying hydrated is important to your overall health.

Drinking water not only quenches your thirst, it helps all the systems in your body function at their best. It supports the immune system, improves the appearance of skin, regulates digestion, supports joint health, and keeps your mind sharp and your days productive.

When you recognize the importance of hydration to your overall health, you will want to ensure you’re drinking enough water every day. For the average person, that’s between 72 and 96 oz. of water – or roughly 2-3 liters – more if you’re exercising heavily.

Water quality testing

If you really want to know what’s in your water, you can do some water quality testing, especially if you suspect there might be problems. Has it suddenly changed in appearance, taste or smell? Could your house have lead contamination from old pipes? Is your well located near areas of concern?

Municipal water systems are required by law to do water quality testing and report any findings of water contaminants to customers, but their tests won’t include the final journey your water takes to your home.

If you have well water, ensuring your drinking water is safe is important and routine testing is encouraged. Check with your local drinking water authority or public health unit to find a lab that is accredited for water quality testing.
