Nutrilite and Amway’s common heritage

When it comes to the products of Amway, some people are confused about the Amway-Nutrilite connection. While Nutrilite is one of Amway’s top selling brands today, it started as its own company in 1934.

Working under the name Ja-Ri Corp., Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos had been active distributors of Nutrilite™ products when they launched Amway in 1959, rising in the ranks to be among Nutrilite’s top sellers.

In fact, the Amway business model was designed largely after what they saw as the successful parts of the Nutrilite model. Sam Rehnborg, Ph.D., son of Carl Rehnborg, who founded Nutrilite in 1934, remembers meeting Rich and Jay at a Nutrilite distributor meeting.

I never forgot how enthusiastic they were about the Nutrilite business and how wonderfully they spoke of my father and what he was doing, Dr. Sam recalled. They could see the benefit of the product, but one thing they also saw was the tremendous potential of the business side of it.

Rich and Jay continued to sell Nutrilite supplements even as they built Amway. And they continued to run into Dr. Sam at industry events. In 1972, the two companies reached a business agreement that allowed Amway Independent Business Owners (IBOs) to sell Nutrilite supplements.

The move expanded Amway’s offerings to include health products as well as home and beauty products. Today, Nutrilite is the world’s number one selling vitamin and dietary supplement brand* as well as one of Amway’s most popular product lines.

Amway products: A family of health & wellbeing brands

Over the years, Amway researchers and scientists have worked continuously to update, improve and expand the Amway catalog of offerings, combining the best of nature and the best of science to introduce innovative, premium, health and wellbeing products across all categories that help people live better, healthier lives.

Nutrilite vitamins and supplements

The Nutrilite brand has grown from a small collection of supplements to a wide array of plant-based Nutrilite vitamins, supplements and organic products using ingredients made from plants grown on certified organic Nutrilite farms or partner farms.

Amway owns and operates nearly 6,000 acres of certified organic farmland where teams grow, harvest, and process plants used to make product ingredients. The process is meticulously tracked as part of the company’s traceability standards, ensuring pure, safe and effective products that address multiple wellness needs, from everyday nutrition, healthy sleep and immune support to heart health, energy support and digestion.

Amway’s Artistry makeup and skin care

Amway launched the Artistry™ brand in 1962. Since then, it has continually evolved, using the latest science and research to create and manufacture healthy beauty products, from makeup and fragrances to skin care and devices.

The brand also follows Artistry Clean guidelines, which dictate no animal testing and require every ingredient to have a purpose. Those that are used have traceable proof that they’re pure, safe and effective. Some use Nutrilite ingredients made from plants grown on Amway-owned certified organic farms or partner farms.

The guidelines also include a list of more than 1,700 ingredients that cannot be used because they don’t meet Artistry’s standards for healthy beauty.

Amway personal care products

In addition to makeup and skin care, Amway offers a collection of personal care products that also complement healthy beauty.

Satinique™ hair care formulas blend botanicals with important nutrients to care for all types of hair. g&h™ body care products are grounded in holistic skin health using plant-based ingredients that are thoughtfully grown, sourced and blended into formulas that support balanced, healthy looking skin. And Glister™ products feature a 3-step oral care system designed for cleaner teeth, healthier gums and fresher breath thanks to Nutrilite-certified peppermint and other plant-based ingredients.

XS: Amway’s energy and sports nutrition line

XS™ Energy drinks – sugar-free with a mega dose of B vitamins – were formulated by two Amway IBOs in 2002. They were looking to meet the market demand for functional drinks. Amway, also seeing the functional drink trend, became the exclusive distributor of XS Energy drinks a year later, rocketing the brand to success.

Amway acquired the XS brand outright in 2015 and has since expanded the offerings to include support for focus, hydration, strengthening and recovery. In addition to the original energy drinks, products include pre- and post-workout formulas as well as protein powders and bars to help people fuel and optimize a fitness journey.

XS also offers a free fitness program to Amway IBOs and registered customers. It provides expert guidance, including workout videos, recipes, eating plans and suggested supplements.

Amway Home products

Several Amway products support a healthy home. Building on the first product sold by Amway – a cleaner called L.O.C.™ – the company now has a complete line of Amway Home™ cleaning and laundry products in addition to cookware and water and air filtration systems.

Amway began selling cookware under the Queen brand in 1963. Water treatment and air treatment systems joined the company’s home tech line in the 1980s. Driven by continuous improvement and innovation, in the early 2000s those products evolved into the brands sold today: iCook™, eSpring™ and Atmosphere™.

Amway’s high standards for product quality

Amway offers more than 350 products in North America under these multiple brands and they all must meet the company’s strict standards for quality and effectiveness.

Every product the company manufactures for IBOs to sell is packaged, made and tested according to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs). This ensures that the highest of standards are applied to every product, every time.

Amway also conducts more than 25,000 quality control tests every month and performs more than 500,000 other types of evaluations, from testing raw materials to ensuring the stability and levels of the macro- and micronutrients in the products.

And each Amway product comes with some of the strongest consumer protections in the industry, a 100% satisfaction guarantee through the Amway Promise. Want to learn more about any of these products or brands? Visit Amway.com.
