What does IBO stand for?

In the world of Amway, IBO stands for Independent Business Owner. Your next question is likely, what is an Amway IBO?

You may have heard some people refer to them as Amway distributors or Amway representatives, but in North America, they are known as Amway Independent Business Owners and they are the entrepreneurs who build their businesses by selling any of Amway’s high quality health and wellbeing products.

Amway operates in more than 100 countries and territories across the globe, on every continent except Antarctica. Combined, there are more than 1 million registered Amway IBOs building their businesses worldwide. That includes more than 290,000 people across North America, including in every U.S. state.

Amway: How it works

How does Amway work? Amway is a direct selling company – in fact, it’s the number one direct selling company in the world, according to Direct Selling News. Direct selling is a popular, longstanding business model where people sell products or services directly to consumers in a non-retail environment – person to person.

At Amway, IBOs build their businesses by selling nutrition, sports nutrition, beauty and home products to customers and by sponsoring others to do the same. How much is earned depends on the results generated. IBOs can earn money in three ways, all connected to selling products to customers. Each product comes with a base price and suggested retail price, but IBOs can set their own retail prices. The difference between Amway’s base price and the retail markup is profit.

The second way to earn money with Amway is through monthly bonuses. These bonuses are based on the quantity and value of the products sold by the IBO each month. The higher the sales volume, the more money can be earned.

The third way IBOs can earn money with Amway is when others they have sponsored into the business also sell products to customers. As IBOs continue to work at their businesses and see results, they may also become eligible for discretionary incentives based on reaching various sales milestones.

An onramp to entrepreneurship

Becoming an entrepreneur is not an easy feat, especially if your business plan requires a large financial investment for things like a brick and mortar location, research and development, manufacturing, warehousing and shipping.

That is not the case for those who choose to own their own business as an Amway IBO. Amway offers more than 350 high quality products supported by a team of nearly 800 innovation and science experts and a globally integrated supply chain that includes nearly 6,000 acres of certified organic farmland, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and customer service.

It costs nothing to become an Amway IBO; registration for the first year is complimentary. Plus, new IBOs receive their own e-commerce storefront that they can customize for their business and immediate access to about 150 courses and training sessions designed to help them learn about the Amway business, selling strategies, leadership skills and product information – all at no cost.

New IBOs may also get one-on-one coaching from their sponsors on sales and marketing strategies, leadership skills and how to build sustainable Amway businesses. IBOs might find they develop other new skills, too, such as communication and public speaking.

Amway also offers a range of mobile apps and digital resources to IBOs, allowing them the freedom to build their businesses at any time and from anywhere, whether they’re using a smartphone, tablet or computer.
