Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect from a foundation?
A well-applied foundation should make your skin look healthy and flawless. It can help to cover imperfections, making your skin look smooth, but natural.

I am so pale. Should I wear a darker shade foundation to add colour to my skin?
No, a darker foundation will look unnatural. Instead, use a foundation shade that has a subtle yellow undertone. This will warm your skin without looking too obvious or too dark.

My skin tone is medium. What shade should I use?
It is important not to choose a shade that is too light, which can make you look washed out, nor too dark, which will look unnatural. Try to match the shade as close to your skin as possible. Choosing a shade with a yellow undertone is a safe way to ensure your skin will look the most natural and give your complexion a little warmth.

I have an olive complexion. What shade of foundation should I wear?
Stay away from pink or orange-based foundations that will give you a mask-like appearance. Instead, use a yellow-based foundation for a natural look that will add warmth to your skin.

I have a dark complexion. What shade of foundation should I wear?
Red or yellow-based foundations, in the copper and soft gold shade range, are typically a good match for dark complexions.

I look really washed out when I use foundation. What can I do?
First, make sure the shade you’re using isn’t too light for your skin tone. You should also avoid pink-based foundations that can make your skin look pale and washed out. Instead, try a foundation with a yellow base for a warm glow.

Why don’t foundations come in cool, warm, or neutral like other colour cosmetics?
We stopped using colour codes for foundation several years ago based on the realization that doing so was actually making it harder for people to find their ideal shade. It is now a standard in the industry to not use these codes for the same reason.

How do I choose a foundation?
A foundation should match your skin tone as closely as possible, and – just as important – it should complement your skin’s undertone. Test which shade looks best by applying a small amount on your jawbone. Not a perfect match? ARTISTRY® foundations are covered by a 180-day money-back Satisfaction Guarantee.

How do I determine my skin’s undertone?
To find your ideal shade match, you must understand your skin undertone. The undertone is your truest, most natural skin colour. To determine your natural skin undertone, the best place to look is on the inside of your forearm. Most people fall into one of three undertone categories: pink, yellow, or neutral. Assess the undertones on the skin of your forearm in both natural and artificial light for the truest reading. If you notice a yellow or olive cast, you have yellow undertones. If your skin has a pink or blue tint, you have pink undertones. And if your skin has a balance of both, or a beige undertone, you have neutral undertones.

It is generally best to choose a foundation with the same undertones as your skin. However, there are exceptions to this rule. If you have pink undertones, but your facial skin is red and blotchy from too much sun exposure or broken capillaries, it is best to avoid pink-hued foundations because they will emphasize the redness in your skin. In this case, choose a yellow or neutral-based foundation to neutralize the redness.
